Situated on a hilltop, Vejer de la Frontera can be dated back to 400BC, but its present day appearance as an impressive 'pueblo blanco' shows the strong influences of its Moorish occupation. It is a magical pueblo to visit whilst in Andalucia, steeped both in history and romanticism.
There is a wonderful blend of cultures and, especially during the summer months you will find artisans offering a variety of arts and crafts locally. There is a very popular street market (Rastro) on the first Sunday of each month and, of course, many ferias, fiestas and traditional events spanning over the course of the year in true Andalucian fashion.
Vejer has an extensive range of shops, pharmacies, butchers, fishmongers, grocers etc., together with many bars and restaurants.
Perched high on its hilltop, Vejer is surrounded by rolling, lush countryside and Natural Parks. There are many outstanding and unspoilt beaches of the Costa de la Luz for relaxation and watersports. The closest is El Palmar, a 12 km long family beach, only a 10 minutes drive away. Alternatively, there are the outstanding beaches of Los Canos de Meca, Trafalgar, Barbate and Conil all within a 15 km drive.
It is well situated for day trips to Cadiz, Jerez and Seville, or the beautiful beach at Bolonia with its dunes and Roman remains. Then there is Tarifa, the most southern point of Europe and gateway to Morocco, with its wonderful kite surfing beaches.
Bicycles can be hired locally. Horse riding and golf are all close by.
Golf: Montenmedio international standard golf course is 3-4kms from Vejer. Golf Melia Sancti Petri us a 25 mins drive and Arcos Gardens Golf & Country Club approx a 50 mins drive.
